Greek history in attic glazes

In 1999, Eleni Aloupi a chemist and archaeological scientist holding a PhD in Material Sciences, founded the THETIS Authentics Ltd consulting and production company and, in 2001, she initiated a pottery studio, the THETIS Workshop. In 2012, the Attic Black brand was launched as the commercial brand of the ceramic products of the workshop featuring iconic, handmade pottery showcasing the Grecian heritage and culture. The expertise of the workshop is the production of the black glaze that characterizes the well-known Archaic and Classical Athenian pottery of the 6th-4th BC. Today the Attic black glaze is recognised as a ceramic-glass, a clay-based nanomaterial with advanced chemical and mechanical properties.

The THETIS team, comprising of young designers, artists, conservators, archaeologists and natural scientists, has been able to recover and revive the ancient craft of classical attic pottery and offer utilitarian and decorative objects whose style, colour, texture, chemical composition and micro-structure cannot be distinguished from the original.
