Anne-Mette Trolle & Thomas Hübschmann

Blooming Copenhagen
Flower designer

From fashion to floristry

  • Anne-Mette is a previous fashion stylist and a self-taught florist
  • She quit her job to open a flower shop with her partner
  • Her bouquets and arrangements are sophisticated and artistic

Previously a fashion designer, in 2017 Anne-Mette Trolle founded her flower brand, Blooming Copenhagen, and has since opened four flower shops with her life and business partner Thomas Hübschmann. Her arrangements have been likened to the extravagant and sophisticated bouquets made in the 1900s by baroness Karen Blixen, the Danish author of Seven gothic tales and Out of Africa. Blooming Copenhagen stands out for its dramatic, artistic and adventurous flower arrangements, meticulously made using imagination and creativity.

Why did you decide to quit fashion?
I was tired of working with clothes and needed something new. Moreover, Thomas and I had been dreaming of creating something together for a long time. I thought of a flower shop because there wasn’t a place in town where bouquets were made exactly the way I wanted them.
How did you learn the basis of floristry?
I am self-taught. Having a creative background, I graduated to the Danish Royal Academy of Fine Arts, it came easy. I learned by doing, using common sense and my previous experience with shapes, colours and textures.
Where do you get your inspiration from?
It comes from so many different things: a children's drawing, a piece of music or artwork, fabrics, and of course nature. I’m the one in charge of the creative aspects of our business, but Thomas helps me with buying the flowers and we always discuss ideas together.
What’s the best part of your job?
I like creating beautiful things that other people will love. My flowers are not going to change the world, but I feel that I can make a difference with them, in my small way. I also enjoy working quickly: in fashion, it takes years to go from the design process to the final product.
Anne-Mette Trolle & Thomas Hübschmann are master artisans: they began their career in 1991 and they started teaching in 2017
