Wenyin Jiang creates jewellery with movement at its centre. She was studying economics in Shanghai when an exchange programme took her to Germany. Wenyin visited galleries and exhibitions across Europe, and during Munich Jewellery Week, she encountered makers whose thinking mirrored her own. Returning home, she assembled a portfolio and applied to Central Saint Martins, where she was accepted despite having no formal art background. "My reasoning was simple. I knew I would still want to study art by the time I turned 60, so why wait?" she explains. After graduating, Wenyin was endorsed by Arts Council England and established a long-term base in the UK. In 2025, she set up her own studio in Fitzrovia and made her debut at the Goldsmiths’ Fair in London.
INTERVIEW
Each piece in my Nibiru collection is inspired by and named after a star. During the Covid-19 lockdown, I started to develop a new visual language, exploring how sound can communicate across distance to bring people closer despite differences.
Movement is at the heart of my practice. I work with materials such as borosilicate glass and precious metals to create pieces that move, balance and interact with the body. Rotation and shifting elements enable the wearer to experience jewellery that evolves visually and physically.
I cut round-bottom laboratory flasks underwater with a diamond disc, and then carefully sand the edges. Borosilicate is strong, durable and light. Unlike regular blown glass, it can handle movement and even some heating without cracking.
I use pliers for everything. My jewellery is constructed from springs, straight lines and curves. The springs make my jewellery mobile. I could not make my work without my pliers.
