Raised in the USA but a resident of Budapest since the early 2000s, Zachary Tipton has always been one of those people who loves making things from whatever he can find. This includes his father's collection of vinyl records. The concept behind Vinylize has been supported by Tipton Eyeworks since the mid-2000s and relies on a patented technology of gluing a vinyl record to the cellulose acetate backing of a pair of glasses and cutting around it with a CNC mill. The luxury frames, which come in dozens of designs, are then finished in the manufacturer’s Budapest workshop, where prospective Vinylize wearers can also get their eyes tested.
The frames are generally made from freshly-pressed records that go unsold – Zachary buys the vinyl in bulk from the pressing plant. He even offers special editions made from original vinyl by the likes of AC/DC. Vinylize clients can look for the band’s trademark lightning bolt on the temple. Ever the innovator, Zachary also makes frames from upcycled bicycle brake bowdens. More than 2000 metres of cables went into making the new Cyklo collection.
