Expressions from pieces of earth

  • Stratos' practice is directly connected to the land
  • Ceramics taught him the importance of patience and perseverance
  • His collaborations with other artists inspire him to explore new techniques

Stratos Zargklis expresses his creativity with ceramics, a craft that combines the classical elements: earth, water, air and fire. His creative process often starts with an image or a feeling that inspires him. Through drawings and experimentation with clay, Stratos lets the material guide him until it finds its form. Working with the coiling technique, he slowly gives shape to his work and enjoys the direct contact with the material. Stratos creates distinct sculptural works and coats them with glazes he makes himself. “Ceramics are deeply rooted in place, even the material comes from the land itself. The craft carries memories, stories and traditions," he says. "Every piece I create is both a personal expression and a reflection of the land that shapes me."

Stratos Zargklis is a rising star: he began his career in 2019 and he started teaching in 2025.

INTERVIEW

In 2008, I graduated in mathematics, but I was desperate to express my creativity through craft. I attended classes in free drawing, ceramics and technology of materials. For five years, I apprenticed with the master Greek ceramicists, and later attended seminars on different building, decorating and firing techniques, both in Greece and Italy.

I received my first award in a PanHellenic Ceramics Competition, and I participated in an International Biennale of Ceramics. These two events reassured me that I am on the right path and gave me the strength and confidence to continue my practice with even more passion.

My main source of inspiration is nature and more specifically the flora and fauna of the seabed. I am fascinated by the way the visible and the invisible coexist there, as well as the familiar and the unknown. Through ceramic art I try to unite the reality of nature and the surrealism of my imagination.

Each piece I create is a reminder of the time and dedication that goes into ceramics. The creative process requires time, concentration and respect. I want to share this journey through my work. At the same time, I express my emotions through forms and textures. Each object carries something personal, but leaves room for the viewer to find their own story in it.
