Guided by the clay
- Silvia developed her practice through independent study and exploration
- She is able to fully express herself with clay
- Her contemplative works result from a repetitive process
Silvia Granata creates ceramic and porcelain sculptures and installations composed of multiple hand built elements. Before finding her passion in ceramics at a raku pottery course in 2007, she had obtained a degree in business studies in the UK. “I realised that I would never be happy among graphs and numbers,” Silvia says. As a self-taught artisan, she developed her skills and artistic practice alongside her career in accounting, until she decided to pursue ceramics full-time in 2019. Silvia also occasionally creates small batches of handmade porcelain tableware and functional objects on commission.

INTERVIEW
I did not choose ceramics, ceramics chose me. The material represents what I am. It is concrete, real, pragmatic and solidly connected to the ground and to a place that is my home. Just like me.
I am fascinated by simple forms and by the quiet variations that emerge when the same gesture is repeated over and over again. Clay records every action and every decision, making it the ideal material for my work.
I work mainly using the slab technique, pushing clay to its limits to achieve lightness and translucency. I am also drawn to smoke firing, where the final result can never be fully predicted. I thouroughly enjoy the dialogue between intention and upredictablity.
My objects always leave room for the unexpected, whether through a crooked rim, a soft movement in the clay or the effects of firing. I believe that clay itself plays an active role in the process, shaping each piece into something unqiue.
