Sergio Pedemonte

Bicycle builder

Driven by passion

  • Sergio's rally driver father began Pedemonte to make race car parts
  • Sergio now applies his experience of carbon fibre to making bikes
  • His bicycles are named after insects, a childhood passion

Sergio Pedemonte’s story proves how a great passion can turn into a career. As a young man, Sergio, who is also a professional swimmer, began to take part in triathlons, and in doing so discovered the pleasure of riding a bicycle. This new passion was to influence his day job in the family business, which produced carbon fibre components for race cars. "I wanted to create something that was completely my own,” he says. "I decided to try my hand at constructing my first prototypes of race bikes, custom-made for myself. That’s how Pedemonte Bike was born in 2014.” These days the company develops made-to-measure race and mountain bikes, tailored to the needs of customers. "In this way, they will benefit from an optimal device, which will always give them the best possible performance.”

What type of clients do you cater for?
Our clients are very diverse. What they share is the desire to take part in all the construction phases of a bike, from taking their measurements onwards. In a way it’s a team effort. The most exciting moment is when I deliver the bike and see the client’s satisfaction after the final trial.
Why are your bikes named after insects?
Insects have been my passion ever since I was a boy. I chose the rhinoceros beetle as the symbol of Pedemonte Bike because it’s an insect that can carry the most weight in relationship to its size. It’s the perfect way to describe carbon fibre, one of the most innovative and high-performing materials.
Are your bikes linked to where you live and work?
Yes, this is a very hilly land, which is perfect to test one’s cycling skills. And then there’s the affectionate nod to my origins: each one of my bikes bears Saint George’s Cross, which is part of Genoa’s flag.
What might we not realise on first glance at a Pedemonte bike?
The difference in performance between a bicycle that was conceived expressly for the physical characteristics of a particular person, and an industrial bike with standard measures. In order to understand the enormous difference between the two, you have to get on the bike and ride.
