Mixing metals, making meaning

  • Roberta is a contemporary artistic jewellery maker, working primarily with metal
  • Her creations are wearable objects that communicate her take on minimalism
  • She develops series based on research and experimentation with materials

Roberta Consalvo Sances began her journey in jewellery design in 2015, following a career in human resources and a degree in east Asian languages. She learned her craft by attending the Alchimia Jewellery School in Florence where she honed her skills in metalworking, and nurtured her inner curiosity. "The power of jewellery goes beyond being just an ornament or a decoration," she says. Roberta expresses its deeper meanings through a minimalist interpretation. Her research is both experimental and conceptual in the techniques and materials she works with. For her one-of-a-kind and serial creations, she employs metals that represent a challenge, metals that need to be forged and tamed, and combines them with a variety of other materials.

Roberta Consalvo Sances is an expert artisan: she began her career in 2015.

INTERVIEW

I will be forever thankful to the school I attended for nourishing my inner inspiration and being open to all sorts of artistic influences. My approach is to start from a concept, then carry out some research and experiment with materials, until I find something that suits the purpose

I draw inspiration from anything that I experience and that surrounds me, be it an emotion, an event, a word or a song. Exhibitions of contemporary art and works by artists from various disciplines are also a constant source of inspiration.

My pieces of jewellery are carefully handcrafted and they are unique creations that tell a story. Each has a special meaning. I like to think that when people wear them, they also carry a connection to the idea that lies behind the concept.

I believe there can be a synergy between the handcrafted process and the use of technology. I think of how 3D printing or design software are valuable allies for searching solutions that can otherwise draw too much energy, energy that should be invested in the creative process itself.
