The mysticism of copper

  • Robert creates illuminating mandalas in copper
  • Hindu mysticism has had a profound influence on his work
  • He hopes his Lightmandalas inspire other artists to carry the craft forward

Robert Thalmeier combines painting, light and spirituality in his coppersmithing practice, deeply influenced by Indian music. “I learnt from several local expert artists in the fields of painting and art. I also met some great masters and gurus, such as the distinguished music and sarod maestro Ali Akbar Khan and spiritual master-saints like Satguru Param Sant Thakar Singh Ji Maharaj,” he says. Robert developed the art of the copper Lightmandala, an invention of his own. “I am inspired by sacred geometry, philosophy, an inner light and sound. I am also influenced by what I call the wordgod, which means playing and creating in the sense of soul and God to raise spiritual awareness and vibration through art and music,” he explains. Robert enjoys inspiring people as much as possible with the abstract meaning and power of light and art combined, and thus evoking the vision of soul and spirituality.

What aspect of your work is not widely known?
I create the front plate for copper Lightmandalas with love and devotion guided by a divine mantra known as Simran. This blesses and charges the artwork with the highest holistic vibrations.
Why is copper an important element in your work?
Copper is valued in spiritual practices for its ability to conduct and amplify energy, promote balance and harmony, ground spiritual experiences, protect against negativity and facilitate healing and spiritual growth.
How do you combine the traditional and the modern in your work?
By merging handcrafted copper mandalas rooted in centuries-old spiritual and artistic traditions with modern lighting technology and design, my Lightmandalas bridge the gap between past and present. They offer a unique synthesis that respects heritage whilst embracing contemporary innovation techniques.
How do you see your craft evolving?
Traditional copper crafts and works will always endure. As for my special copper Lightmandala artworks, I believe this craft will, sooner or later, be embraced and further developed by other inspired artists.
