Rikke Laursen creates paper-thin stoneware forms balancing botanical shapes, drapery and organic abstraction. Working from her Copenhagen studio, she has developed her own sculptural methodology, refining clay into delicate leaf-like structures that cast intricate shadows and evoke movement. "I allow each piece to evolve through an intuitive dialogue with the material itself," she says. Although often associated with coral formations or underwater life, Rikke's inspiration stems from flowers, femininity and natural growth. Alongside her studio practice, she shares her specialised techniques through workshops with visitors from all over the world.
INTERVIEW
I get totally consumed by clay. I cannot think about anything else when working with it. All my attention is focused on the process itself. I can only reach this state when I am developing something new, which makes the craft so mindful.
I worked in the financial sector, doing what I thought was my dream job, until I began to struggle with stress and depression. After painting abstracts for 20 years, I participated in a beginner's ceramic cours in 2019, and was completely obsessed! I chose to turn my life around and follow my own path.
It took years to find clay with the expressive capabilities I was looking for. I experimented with hundreds of types from all over the world, learning that each had its own secret recipe. I mostly care about the buildable quality of the clay, as well as its colour.
I am very social and love sharing what I learn. This craft can be isolating, so I value the open exchanges that happen in my workshops. Working with small groups from different cultures creates a safe and almost therapeutic space.
