A tip of the hat

  • Patrizia is inspired by art, life, emotions and nature
  • For her a hat must be made using hands, head and heart
  • She reinterprets vintage models respecting contemporary taste

The story of the oldest hat workshop in Rome began in 1936 with the Cirri family, who were previously hat makers in Tuscany. The business was resurrected in 2003 thanks to the passion and perseverance of Patrizia Fabri, who rechristened it "Antica Manifattura Cappelli", thus keeping alive a rare testimony to the world of handmade hats. A sophisticated designer and fashion historian, Patrizia is absolutely convinced that hats are an essential accessory to show feminine charm and elegance. At Patrizia’s workshop everything is handmade, and therefore tailored to the taste and needs of each client, who can choose their model, the raw material used to make it, the colour and type of decoration, including their initials inside the hat.

Why did you choose this craft?
A hat encompasses all the arts and by wearing a handmade hat, all five senses are activated. A hat is a unique and irreplaceable object, rich in symbolic and psychological meanings.
What are your specialisations?
We specialise in the traditional techniques of handmade hats. But above all, over 85 years of activity we have collected more than 2000 authentic models, which document a century of “Made in Italy” fashion through their shape, geometry, and volume.
What is little known about your craft?
Firstly that the hats were made of rabbit fur. Secondly that hats have no seams, as they are three-dimensional objects like sculptures. Thirdly that at a certain point in the creative process hats end up in a special oven.
What about your collaborations with famous designers?
I have worked for many big names. The memories I cherish most are tied to Roberto Capucci, with whom I have had the pleasure and honour to work side by side with mutual respect. Together we created the most amazing hats.
