The finer details rendered on tulle

  • Paola is a master of hand embroidery on tulle
  • She merges traditional motifs with colourful touches
  • She shares her expertise through teaching courses and authoring books

Paola Matteucci is an Italian artisan who specialises in hand embroidery on tulle. Drawn to this nearly lost tradition, she transformed it into her artistic voice and has been practising since the mid 1990s. Paola's designs remain faithful to traditional embroidery stitches while introducing modern elements such as natural-dyed silk threads and three-dimensional effects. Each piece requires meticulous preparation, as the embroidery must perfectly match the underlying design set up by basting. Passionate about preserving this craft, Paola teaches embroidery on tulle, to ensure its survival, finding joy in witnessing her students' progress and the artistic exchange that enriches both teacher and student.

What drew you to the art of embroidery on tulle?
Tulle embroidery was nearly disappearing in my country, practised only by a few elders. I learned it out of curiosity but soon felt it was my true artistic calling. Its transparency and lightness became my way of expression, allowing me to bring my designs to life.
How do you innovate in your craft?
In tulle embroidery, my designs are modern while respecting tradition in stitches and process. I study ancient stitches and apply them in new ways for unique effects. By introducing silk threads dyed with natural colours, I create a freer, nature-inspired embroidery with depth and vibrancy.
What is the most challenging aspect of working with tulle?
The most challenging aspect is the meticulous preparation, including the preliminary drawing and basting. The embroidery must precisely match the design, requiring mastery of stitches to ensure accuracy. The process is time-consuming but essential for a flawless result.
Why is it important for you to teach and share your expertise?
After dedicating so much time to this art, sharing it feels natural. Teaching keeps an ancient tradition alive and ensures it is not lost. Seeing my students grow and become independent in embroidery on tulle is deeply rewarding for me. I see it foster creativity, artistic exchange and have a meaningful impact on their lives.
