As a young electrical engineering graduate from Belgrade University, Nina Udović was at a crossroads between science and art. "Even though I entered the corporate world at the time, my fascination with stained glass never faded," she says. Eventually, Nina decided to give it a real chance and completed a year-long stained glass making training programme in 1999. In the very same year, she also founded her workshop, Stained Glass Studio Mozzaik, formerly known as Atelje Vitraž. Nina has built a diverse artistic portfolio that ranges from stained glass panels to mirrors and lamps, including commissions for private clients, companies and art galleries worldwide. Through various collaborations with architects, her pieces travel far beyond Serbia, finding their place in interiors in France, Russia and Azerbaijan, among others.

What do you love most about stained glass making?
I love creating artistic objects with glass, a beautiful and magical material. I love the design process and cutting unique glass sheets into shapes that I assemble into artworks.
What techniques do you work with?
I work with traditional stained glass making techniques, primarily the Tiffany technique, grisaille, using pigments and enamels, and glass fusing. I often combine these approaches, integrating fused and hand painted details directly into my stained glass pieces.
What does your creative process look like?
I begin with a drawing and selecting the right glass, which is essential, as each sheet has its own colour, transparency and texture. The glass is then cut by hand, shaped, painted when needed and fired in the kiln. Finally, each piece is wrapped in copper foil and soldered together.
Which one of your pieces is your personal favourite?
It is difficult to choose, but one of them for sure is the Glass Globe, a one-metre stained glass sphere on a metal structure for internal lighting and suspension. It is possibly unique worldwide. It was commissioned by a Serbian company’s office in the Emirates.
