Marina Marinski

Ceramicist

Living her dream

  • Marina works in the picturesque town of Kastav, Croatia
  • Her products are inspired by nature and sweet childhood memories
  • She values the freedom she has in her practice

After studying history of art and computer science, in 2011 Marina Marinski got an opportunity to work as an apprentice in a renowned potter's studio. This was her first real contact with clay and the production process. It turned out to be a life changer, love at first sight. Two years later, she got a degree in ceramic design and opened her own company. Marinski Heartmades specialises in making ceramic products for everyday use, such as tableware, home decor and jewellery. Products are crafted in her studio from beginning to end, using techniques including casting, wedging, 3D modelling, 3D printing, throwing on the wheel, glazing, colouring, designing and product photography. “While making, I take every piece into my hands at least 15 times, so it truly is a part of me,” says Marina.

How would you define what you do?
I am the owner and designer behind the brand Marinski Heartmades. We specialise in making fairytale-like ceramics for everyday use. My production process always starts with imagination and continues as skilful play between hands and clay.
What is your ethos?
At the studio we cherish honest and sustainable materials. We play fair – with people and the environment. We strive to keep traditional craftsmanship alive. Like many non-material things in life, it is about the quality, not the quantity.
Why did you choose to work for yourself?
The idea of running my own place came slowly after years of making jewellery as a hobby. I was creative from my early years and too stubborn to work for someone in an office with fixed working hours. I dreamt of creating something special, from my heart, under my own rules.
What is the most memorable moment of your career?
In 2014, I was asked to take over a ceramic studio located nearby. My company was very young at that point and I was working from my garage. Not only was I offered a beautiful space, but also all the machinery and kilns available for everyday use and mentoring were included.
