Handing down a passion for frames

  • Marco is renowned in Geneva for his art frames
  • He specialises in wood and a diverse range of modern materials
  • His atelier provides first-class conservation and restoration services as well

Thinking back on how he became a frame maker, Marco Colucci recalls that he had always been drawn to the world of art and artisanal know-how. He discovered frame making at the age of 16, taking a training course in a woodcarving and gilding workshop in Geneva. “I was immediately fascinated by this craft that was part of a long tradition of craftsmanship.” He completed his education in restoration first under John Archinard and then at Palazzo Spinelli, the Institute for Art and Restoration in Florence. In 1990, Marco opened his workshop at 46 rue de Lyon, soon becoming a point of reference for private and institutional clients. “After all these years,” he says, “I still take great pleasure in designing the models for my frames and making them from start to finish.”

Is being based in Geneva important for your work?
Geneva is a multicultural city, with both an international art market and a thriving local scene. We work closely with Geneva institutions, galleries and collectors. Our suppliers are also Swiss, and meet our high-quality standards.
What are the distinguishing features of your work?
We are experts in the design and production of frames, as well as the restoration of antique painted or gilded frames. Our main concern is to create a frame that can serve the double purpose of providing the best aesthetic solution for a work of art and its conservation.
Where do you look for inspiration?
I regularly consult design and interior architecture magazines to keep up with the latest trends and tastes. It is also very rewarding to go to art exhibitions, where the artists themselves sometimes create their own setting to showcase their work.
Are you passing on your competencies?
I am very fortunate that my son Oscar shares my same passion. He is halfway through his four-year apprenticeship, training under Laurent, a talented master artisan with whom I was friends in school and who is at the head of his workshop.

Marco Colucci is a master artisan: he began his career in 1986 and he started teaching in 1990
