Lucie Telecká handcrafts smart, simple and solid leather objects; perfectly elaborated pieces of high quality seemingly lacking nothing. Yet it's the designer herself who claims that no product of hers is complete until someone uses it. "Only once my products are being used, I consider them finished. They have to serve. Unless they're nothing more than decoration." Every piece is handmade by the designer herself who rarely has any assistance. The graduate of Westminster University in London took part in internships in France, the United Kingdom and Czechia, gaining experience of various types of leatherwork. After that, she founded her brand Leather Utilities, combining all the different techniques that she had learnt.
Interview
- Why didn't you stay in London?
- Because I love Czechia! Of course, theoretically, I could do my work anywhere: I have no employees, I get the leather from Italy and the zippers from Switzerland. But my beloved ones are here. As well as my workshop.
- What kind of leather do you use?
- I work with vegetable tanned full-grain leather from Tuscany. It has the "Pelle al vegetale" certificate, which means that it comes from happy cows living free in nature. This leather carries details like marks from insect stings and other "imperfections".
- Do you like imperfections?
- I love that leather actually matures thanks to them. If you give the same leather product to two different people, after a year the things will look different. It'll be stretched or darker on the parts that are used the most. It reflects its owners.
- How do your products reflect you?
- They reflect my vigilant perception of the everyday. I'm inspired by cornices of houses, old bookbindings or shadows. And above all, by the very nature of the traditional leathercraft: its plain and elegant shapes, its thoroughness and functionality.
