Landscapes painted in abstract straw

  • Letizia's straw marquetry landscapes feature organic earth tones
  • She created a bespoke piece for Her Royal Highness Grand Duchess
  • The National Museum of Luxembourg holds two of her sculptures

Letizia Romanini explored many mediums before discovering straw marquetry. "I was instantly captivated and knew the craft's precision and repetitive gestures suited both my temperament and artistic practice," she says. Letizia is inspired by nature, landscapes and flora, and her work explores memory, territory and perception while bringing a 17th-century craft into the present. Her pieces are characteristically abstract, organic and rendered in earthy tones, evoking the depth of landscape paintings. During a tour of her native country Luxembourg, Letizia traced borders by walking and observing, using these experiences to inhabit and interpret the land. The compositional lines of her photographs became the foundation for her straw marquetry designs.

Letizia Romanini is a rising star: she began her career in 2022 and she started teaching in 2023.

INTERVIEW

My multidisciplinary practice combines straw marquetry with sculpture, installation, photography and ceramics to explore our relationship with the world. Through deceleration and attentive making, I create moments of pause that reshape our perception of time.

My studio is located in a large building shared by around 40 craftspeople. It is filled with natural light from large windows, and features a central workbench, a desk on one side and storage on the other.

Creating Taraxacum for the Fiat Lux exhibition marked an important milestone in my practice. It is my largest straw marquetry piece to date and features the most intricate pattern I have created.

As someone deeply curious about both craftsmanship and the people who share it with me, I believe in the intelligence of the hand and the importance of carrying gestures from the past into the future.
