Why did you choose wood carving?
Wood carving felt like a return more than a decision. I come from a long line of carpenters, and though I first trained in the arts, I was always drawn back to the quiet rhythm of hand tools and the presence of wood. It gave form to something I already carried inside me.
When did you first think of picking up this craft?
I have always felt a continuous pull. I was always reaching for tools in my grandfather’s woodworking shop when I was small, drawn in by scent, shape and quiet magic.
How is wood carving linked to the territory around you?
I work almost entirely with reclaimed or local wood, including timber from old Norwegian houses, branches and ocean-worn driftwood. The land gives me both material and rhythm, and I try to carve in a way that respects its voice.
What do people usually not know about what you do?
How physically demanding carving is. It is not delicate in the way people imagine. It requires strength, balance and a deep trust in both process and material. I often work outdoors or in simple conditions, guided more by feeling than by formulas.
