How does nature influence your work?
Nature is the cornerstone of my art. I observe and recreate natural forms in metal, often repeating elements to create clusters or simplifying nature's lines. My work aims to offer viewers a sense of rest, much like nature itself does in our busy world.
How have your experiences shaped your artistic practice?
My childhood in Jeju's natural beauty was crucial in shaping my artistic sensibility. Studying in Seoul and abroad broadened my perspective. International experiences encouraged me to express my roots in my work. Time spent in a professional workshop taught me invaluable skills and management insights. These collective experiences inform my current practice.
Can you explain your micro-welding technique?
Micro-welding uses argon gas and low electric voltage for precise work. It is similar to traditional welding but suited to delicate pieces. I use different welding rods depending on the base material and adjust voltage and power according to the size and material of each piece.
Could you share some insights on your efforts to minimise your environmental impact?
I am conscious of the environmental impact of my craft. I have replaced chemical cleaning agents with natural alternatives like vinegar and salt. I repurpose exhibition stands into artwork boxes. As artists inspired by nature, I believe we have a responsibility to understand and care for our environment.
