The poetry of reduction

  • A poetic concept always underlies Gunther's objects
  • His family has been carpenters for three generations
  • When crafting his pieces, he gives it his all

Gunther Pfeffer's studio is located in the carpenter's workshop where both his grandfather and father worked. As a carpenter himself, he began his career by working for a company that handled yacht interior fixtures. During this time, Gunther became inspired by what can be accomplished when no effort nor expense is spared. For his master and design studies, he attended the renowned School for Wood and Design in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Currently, his time is almost entirely devoted to his own creations. Each piece of furniture Gunther constructs rests on a carefully considered concept, usually based on a poetic idea. By paying close attention to detail and engaging intensely with everything from the concept to the craftsmanship, he creates puristic sculptural pieces.

What would you describe as your design style?
As far as the surface of my furniture is concerned, I would describe it as minimalist and sculptural. But I always see my furniture as a puristic concentrate of the poetic concept that underlies it. My works put great importance on innovative implementation, down to the smallest detail.
Can you provide an example of a conceptual piece?
Last year's Danner Prize-winning Raster display cabinet. Initially, it appears as an object of furniture with grid-shaped panelling that is only visible from certain angles. Looking behind the facade requires the viewer to take new perspectives. Actively examining the piece in greater detail will reward you with increasingly finer details as you go deeper.
What are the ways in which your work blends tradition with innovation?
Traditional carpentry is my background, and I am capable of using all commonly used techniques. However, I am always experimenting with new methods, such as gluing veneer and turning it. I also create a digital twin on the computer before I begin a new piece.
What was a particularly beautiful professional experience you had?
The recognition I receive in the form of prizes for my work is always nice. It is also always fulfilling to see a completed piece after a long process of creativity and craftsmanship. For me, another source of joy is when I am able to convey to the audience what I intended with my work.
