Circles of clay as circles of life

  • Flavia makes tableware and decoration items in simple tones
  • She is the founder of The Circle Objects ceramics atelier
  • Japanese aesthetics influence her creative vision

Circles are more than shapes for Italian ceramicist Flavia del Grosso. They embody her life motto of balance, serenity and strength, which she expresses through her hand-thrown clay artworks. Often round and softly glazed, Flavia's pieces are designed not only to be seen, but also felt, offering a tactile experience that deepens the connection between object and observer. Flavia shapes each artwork on the wheel and finishes it by hand, which allows subtle irregularities. The Naples-born artist has a background in visual design, which, twinned with inspiration from the spiritual elegance of Japanese aesthetics, gives her ceramics a considered minimalism. Flavia shares her know-how with students in a variety of ceramics courses in her atelier.

How did your visual design experience influence your ceramics?
My professional journey as an art director and visual designer has been guided by a search for harmony and beauty, expressed through minimalist language. This aesthetic approach shapes my ceramic artworks, with each piece being a visual gesture that provokes deep emotions.
What does working at the wheel mean to you on a personal level?
It is a moment of presence, a gesture that listens to the living material, seeking balance and centre through rotation. Throwing clay means accepting mistakes as opportunities for growth and trusting the process while practising patience and continuity. I am not looking for perfection, but for the strength to complete each piece, allowing it to tell its own story.
In what ways does nature inspire your creative process?
I am drawn to the Japanese aesthetics, especially the way nature is embraced conceptually. In my own practice, this is apparent in my use of raw materials and in forms that arise from spontaneous, intuitive gestures. My colour palettes evokes the warm tones of sunsets and the soft shades of skin, creating an intimate link between nature and mankind.
How would you like your artworks to resonate with viewers?
I hope that people who encounter my work feel an intimate resonance, as if the objects hold unspoken stories and suspended emotions. I want each gesture and each form to spark a silent dialogue, provoking deep feelings and opening a space for reflection and wonder.
