Atelier George
Glassblower

All in the mould

  • Eve and Laurent master all the phases of production
  • They never make two identical objects
  • They think in terms of manufacturing tools rather than objects

Pushed by the need to reconnect her creativity with manual work, Eve George fell in love with blow molding glass, a craft she says helps her connect with matter. She studied design at the ENSCI-Les ateliers in Paris specialising later in mouth blowing among other glass techniques. Laurent Fichot is a glassblower by trade with fifteen years of experience. Coming from a family of ceramicists, he has always designed and manufactured handmade objects. His mastery of art shooting and cane blowing techniques give him the versatility necessary to create their glass tiles, luminaires and decorative objects. Using their own optical, modular and ephemeral moulds, their work involves a skilful mix of techniques halfway between serial manufacturing and one-off design.

What was your first experience together?
Eve: In 2012, we had the opportunity to work together on a project called Les Feuilles de Verre. I made origami out of folded paper shaped like moulds and Laurent blew into them. We never suspected this project would be the starting point of our collaboration.
How important is innovation in your work?
Eve: We practise a know-how dating back to antiquity, hybridizing it with digital technologies. Digital manufacturing is one of our fields of exploration. It enables us to develop our own moulds or to design new glass blowing tools we use to create contemporary forms.
What is less known about your craft?
Laurent: As a glassblower, you don't necessarily need a lot of breath and you don't get burned often. Yet, it's a very energy-intensive field. Therefore, complying to sustainable practices and applying them to our production seems like an ethical thing to do for a greener future.
Do you remember when and why you choose this job?
Laurent: As a child, I saw a glassmaker working with a blowtorch. I knew right away that I would shape molten glass. It’s a perfect combination of balance and play!
