Chasing beauty and finding it in flowers

  • Dylan designs flowers inspired by nature and art from the past
  • His pieces are eclectic and feature a great sense of colour
  • He sources his flowers from local farms

A recurring theme of Dylan Tripp’s path has always been the quest for beauty, from his early career in the fashion industry to his flower design practice since 2012. “I followed my instinct for beauty and found flowers, which allow me to have control over the entire designing creative process,” he says. After a brief training in London, Dylan learned how to create artistic compositions on his own, choosing and arranging flowers sourced from local farms. He opened his studio in 2020 in Rome, where he works on fashion events and shoots, private functions and creative workshops. “My style is eclectic and innovative. I do not have a favourite flower, but I tend to use large and unusual ones, such as alliums, decorative chrysanthemums and Iceland poppies,” says Dylan.

How do you express tradition and innovation in your work?
I draw inspiration from art – the great masterpieces of the past, still-life paintings and sculptures, as well as traditional techniques used in other crafts. I want to make something that is linked to the past but bears my personal touch in its final form.
Do you think of flower design as a glamorous craft?
Not exactly! Like most crafts, it involves a lot of thinking, ingenuity and research. It demands plenty of early mornings at the market, late nights in preparation and a great deal of physical effort to move around large buckets full of flowers and huge vases.
How did you move from fashion to flower design?
I am obsessed with beauty. It is a very tangible, non-abstract concept that involves both natural and manmade elements – I feel very lucky to be surrounded by so much of it. I am also attracted to colours, their meanings, combinations, shades and contrasts, which I have easy access to in flower design.
How do you collaborate with your clients?
Some clients allow full freedom, while others give input that shapes the project. Companies and brands provide very well-defined briefs, which I build on by offering advice and adjusting details. Overall, it becomes a collaborative, productive process.
