Daniele Bannino

Luthier | Milan, Italy

An eternity of music

  • Daniele believes that human imperfections make musical instruments unique
  • The first instrument he made was a cajón that he still uses as a chair at home
  • He studied at the Civic School of Violin Making in Milan from 2013 to 2017

Daniele Bannino has showed interest in the instrument making process since he was learning the cello as a child. After visiting the renowned lutherie schools of Milan and Cremona, he stopped his cello studies, moved to Milan and devoted himself to violin making. This experience landed Daniele an internship in maestro Lorenzo Rossi's workshop, who became his master, along with Stefano Gibertoni. "I am both a restorer and a maker," he says. In the workshop he opened in 2020, Daniele designs and constructs stringed instruments with modern finishes using traditional techniques. His restoration practice aims to bring back the originality and integrity of antique instruments.

What kind of digital tools do you work with?
Every year, I study the most modern techniques in the field of restoration and conservation, such as the use of 3D laser scanners for the design of inserts and the replacement of damaged parts.
How do you balance tradition and technology?
I stay true to traditional construction techniques, expressing the best of what human beings can do with their own hands. I am guided by pure intuition. Technology is a great support, but I do not believe that AI will ever be able to replace human beings.
Do you think your craft is an endangered one?
No, I do not think so. As long as music and musicians exist, there will be always luthiers restoring and building new instruments. Musicians and luthiers have a unique, trusting bond, due to their common passion for music.
Are you a maker or a restorer?
I am both. An instrument has a life of its own, and as a maker, I build a rapport with it. As a restorer, I bring it back to its original condition and splendour. When it gets played again, the instrument should be able to express its full potential.
