Three generations of craftsmanship
- This type of leatherwork originates in 8th century Cordoba
- Daniel likes to express his personality and feelings in his work
- His grandparents, Mercedes and Angel, founded the Meryan brand
As a third generation leather craftsman, Daniel López-Obrero perfects and perpetuates the traditional leather embossing and engravings techniques known as Cordoban and Guadamecí, which he learned from his father and grandparents. Daniel and his brother Carlos continue to preserve and develop the traditional skills of the workshop, first set up by his grandparents in 1951 under the leathercraft brand Meryan. The workshop’s team is passionate about raising awareness of these techniques and giving them the status they deserve.
INTERVIEW
My training was carried out entirely in our workshop, through my father and grandfather. I did not study in an art school, but as a child, I learned from my parents and above all from my grandparents, bit by bit.
When I was in secondary school, I used to go to the workshop during the summer holidays to help my parents. One year, I wanted to buy a bike, so they told me to come and work and that with that money I could buy the bike that I wanted.
The most complicated tasks are transferring drawings to the skin, embossing the leather and getting a good quality embossed colour.
There is a very close link because the Cordoban technique originates in our own city and our artisanship is totally rooted in our culture. This technique does not originate anywhere else.
