A natural transformation for Indian furniture
Multidisciplinary Mumbai-based design studio Chacko creates collectible furniture pieces with a contemporary Indian aesthetic. Founded by Vipin Joe, an industrial designer who trained with renowned sculptor Subodh Kerkar in Goa, its practice is defined by a philosophy of design by making. Furniture pieces frequently feature reclaimed teak wood and etched brass created through experiments with industrial chemical processes, metal patination and traditional woodworking. In this way, the studio acts as a bridge between the precision of technical drafting and the organic unpredictability of artisanal craft.
The doors of the tabernacle presented at Homo Faber 2026 feature the work of fine artist Gaia Cairo who has illustrated three endangered species native to the Indian subcontinent in her signature style. It was created in collaboration with Sampigé & Co., whose intricate marquetry captures exquisite detail in the composition. The piece was further layered with a jali-style illuminated border, and refined through multiple prototypes. Carefully selected from natural woods and assembled piece by piece, marquetry becomes an apt medium to honour the rarity and vulnerability of the species depicted.
