Cezar Blînda

LUN
Wood sculptor | Iohanisfeld, Romania

Neo-organic object design

  • Cezar typically crafts fluid forms and smooth lines
  • His wife, an artist and jewellery designer, has influenced his creative style
  • Wooden jewellery items were among his first pieces of work

With a degree in philosophy, Cezar Blînda started exploring woodworking in 2015. He taught himself the craft through experimentation, and after much research and attempts to define his style, he now creates functional and sculptural objects for the home. His wife, Manuela Marchiș, is the one who instilled in him the idea of making such pieces in a neo-organic style, playing an extremely important role in his evolution as a craftsman. After a few years of creating works separately, the two joined their artistic vision in 2020 at LUN Studio, and subsequently opened an art space for exhibitions and workshops in woodworking, painting and papermaking in their village. In his work, Cezar uses the Japanese shou sugi ban technique of wood burning, which he has adapted to his objects to highlight the beauty of simplicity and contrast.

Why did you choose this craft?
The mere fact of creating something, anything, regardless of material, places you in a position of both privilege and responsibility. It is a providential freedom that not all people possess.
In what way is your craft linked to the territory?
Space is significant in what I do. At the moment, I live in a village in the plains, surrounded by nature, the muse without which I could not create. However, my art does not necessarily belong to a geographical or cultural area. If I moved to the desert tomorrow, I would be inspired by the wind dancing on the dunes.
How does nature inspire you?
It remains my most important source of inspiration. I conceptualise parts or manifestations of nature rather than imitating it. For example, the river that flows will always find the right path – I assimilate these concepts into creation to create a form or sensation.
How do you express tradition and innovation in your work?
A few guidelines help me in what I do, including that the objects should be timeless, versatile in terms of space, ergonomic, functional and with natural finishes. That is why they cannot be tied to a tradition or a point in time.
