Painterly ceramics in dynamic motion
- Caroline creates individual elements that join to form a whole
- She enjoys the immediacy of brushwork
- Her compositions are defined by energy and a sense of movement
From her ceramic workshop, a converted dairy in rural Hampshire, England, Caroline Egleston creates wall mounted ceramic sculptures, each surface animated by her bold, painterly brushwork. "In my twenties, I spent time in Italy surrounded by vibrant tin-glazed earthenware. This drew me into the world of ceramics," she says. Her experience led her to study maiolica for two years at a dedicated ceramic school in Faenza. Back in England, wanting to make something both functional and artistic while raising a young family, Caroline built a career crafting colourful abstract ceramic tiles. In 2023, she completed a master's in ceramics at Farnham. Caroline's ceramic work is sought after in the interior design world for bespoke commissions ranging from individual accent pieces to large scale wallscapes.

INTERVIEW
I use grey clay and clay slip, paired with glazes I make myself. As these glazes melt at different temperatures, I often combine them to explore contrasts, playing matte textures against glossy surfaces. My work centres on rhythm, flow and duality. I seek balance between opposing elements, and clay is a tactile material that aligns with my creative mindset.
I am drawn to creating flat planes, as they offer a generous canvas for painting. However, tiles began to feel limiting over time, which why I started to introduce dimension in subtle ways that suggest movement.
While the clay is drying, I lift and balance sections in an intuitive process. Glazing is always unexpected. I do not always know which colours will come to the front and which burn away in the kiln. I like that element of uncertainty.
Colours are always in dialogue with one another. I like to introduce focal points of dynamic colour combinations that draw the eye. As human beings, we love colour and instinctively respond to it.
