The Cardozo Kindersley Workshop in Cambridge was founded by David Kindersley in 1946 and is now run by his widow, Dr Lida Lopes Cardozo, and her daughter-in-law, Roxanne Kindersley. To bring beautiful letters to life in the modern day, the workshop applies the knowledge and traditions of a craft dating back thousands of years. The team of master artisans and apprentices design, cut, paint and gild entirely by hand, working without machines in favour of hammer and chisel. The atelier specialises in lettering in stone, extending to glass, metal, wood and on paper. Their work includes memorials, commemorative plaques, heraldic carving, sundials, sculpture, bookplates, typefaces and lettering cut directly into buildings.
Commissions, both large and small, come from private individuals and public bodies. Cardozo Kindersley Workshop's work can be seen at the British Library, the British Museum, the V&A, Westminster Abbey, St Paul’s Cathedral and in countless cemeteries and churches across the UK and around the world. Books on lettering, published by Cardozo Kindersley Editions, are available through the website and from several museums and galleries.
