Bernd Schreiner

UNICUM WIEN OESTERREICH
Bag maker | Vienna, Austria

Following his passion

  • Bernd’s first career was in the Swiss watch industry
  • In his 40s, he left his job to launch his own business
  • Practicality determines the design of his objects

Bernd Schreiner was 15 when he set up his first workshop in the basement of his parents' home, after being inspired by his father and grandfather who taught him how to carefully handle tools and materials in different crafts. Later, while pursuing a corporate career in the international watchmaking industry, he continued his artisanal work at home, improving his skills, designing, making and upcycling everyday products. Gradually, demand for his work from family, friends and colleagues increased, and so when Bernd was in his 40s, he decided to quit his job and start his own business, UNICUM. He now specialises in upcycling and renovating aluminium suitcases and making leather briefcases and bags.

Was there a pivotal moment that pushed you to start your business?
In my last job, I had an appointment with the lead buyers of Harrods in London. Instead of talking about the development of a new watch, we only chatted about my handmade briefcase and upcycled Rimowa trolley. That was the push I needed to start my business.
Why are travel items your signature products?
I always had to travel a lot in my previous jobs, so I had a special connection to suitcases and bags. I renovate them by making handles and belts out of leather, replacing the original rollers with those from inline skates or longboards, and changing the lining for goatskin.
Your work seems like a real passion project...
I always feel the pain of separation whenever I sell an object. I am so closely connected to all my products and I put the same effort into them as I would if I was making them for myself. I’m delighted when clients proudly send me pictures of one of my bags from some part of the world.
What would you advise others wanting to start a creative business?
More important than a business plan is your gut feeling. Look for well-intentioned mentors, try to set up a small financial buffer, use your network and follow your passion, belief and talent. I wish everyone the same deep satisfaction I feel after positive feedback from my customers.
