The transformational art of batik

Founded in 1991 by Dutch-born Els Hooft, Baobab Batik is a social enterprise in Eswatini dedicated to women’s empowerment through craft. Els discovered batik dyeing in Benin and Tanzania, and brought the technique to Eswatini, where she began experimenting with melted wax and dyes. From the start, she employed only women, believing that every woman deserves the chance to build a sustainable livelihood. What started out as a hobby became a mission to offer a source of pride and independence to women, all the while refining the art of batik.

At Baobab Batik, more than 15 women artisans craft homewares, clothing and children’s garments, sold locally and exported worldwide. Each piece is unique, and each so-called imperfection is a stamp of authenticity. Wax cracks unpredictably and the dye seeps through, forming beautiful patterns reminiscent of African landscapes and wildlife. Baobab Batik prioritises natural materials such as cotton, rayon and linen will soon be added to the palette. The manufacturer works in safe processes and advocates for artisans' wellbeing. Blending tradition and modern design, Baobab Batik’s creations celebrate Eswatini’s culture while offering women long-term opportunities for growth.
