Human depictions beyond clay
- Anna is self-taught in their ceramic practice
- Their works are characterised by experimentation across materials
- They explore storytelling through sculptural form
Anna Khmaladze develops ceramic forms through constant experimentation with materials. While clay remains central to the practice, they introduce felt, leather and other materials to their sculptural works. "My path to ceramics was unconventional," Anna says. After studying psychology and film, they began creating figures during Covid, transforming old clothes and everyday materials into objects. What began as an intuitive exploration gradually led them towards clay and a deeper engagement with spatial form. Cinema continues to nourish Anna's imagination, while forms inspired by the human body allow them to express inner states.

INTERVIEW
I often experiment with different materials, because each one has its own character and way of responding. Clay remains my favourite, as it feels alive and demanding. During sculpting, it responds to my gestures, creating a dialogue between intention, material and form.
I usually begin with a specific image in mind, but the work never turns out exactly as I imagine it would. The making process reveals what is possible and what the form requires and allows. Once I am done, the work is no longer mine, it belongs to the viewer.
A work is complete when it begins to speak on its own. When the image or internal state that guided me becomes visible in the object, I stop. The decision is intuitive.
Students discover trust in themselves. Working with the material awakens intuition and often reveals something new about who they are. I hope they experience openness and self-confidence. At the same time, craft carries and teaches culture, memory and everyday knowledge.
