The surprise from the kiln

  • Anna Karin opened her studio in Uzès in 2018
  • The light of the South of France carries and inspires her every day
  • She sees her work as a celebration of imperfection through porcelain clay

Anna Karin Andersson, a self-taught ceramicist, developed her passion for clay at the age of nine in a community workshop in Gothenburg, Sweden. After a career as a model in Paris, she returned to her love of pottery, opening her studio in Uzès in 2018. Her artistic approach is characterised by a constant exploration of porcelain, experimenting with techniques such as casting, wheel throwing, coiling, and slab building. Anna Karin creates functional and decorative pieces, incorporating elements of nature to infuse poetry into everyday life. As an autodidact, Anna Karin celebrates the ignorance of rules, encouraging a sense of release and open-mindedness. She draws inspiration from nature, the southern light, dance, and travels.

When did you decide to fully dedicate yourself to pottery?
I bought my first kiln in 2014, which allowed me to deepen my craft as a ceramicist. At the same time, I was managing a bed and breakfast business and a family life with two children. Working with clay occupied my free time, but it was not until 2018, after selling the bed and breakfast, that I fully immersed myself in pottery work.
What techniques do you employ, given that you are self-taught?
I've been lucky in a sense to not know 'how to do things correctly' with clay. I constantly explore and experiment with porcelain. I took a workshop on casting and paper porcelain eight years ago, where I encountered plaster moulds for the first time. Since then, I have continued to blend techniques. I learn a lot through YouTube videos and from friends. I have made many mistakes, which has led me to a way of working where I allow for creative freedom.
How do you describe your artistic process?
I often create classic pieces, such as cups and bowls. At the same time, I try to explore other avenues every day and rejoice in the results. I let the imperfections of the clay show, often on unglazed porcelain bisque. I love the traces of life on my pieces and seek acceptance of imperfections.
What brings you the most joy about being a ceramicist?
Everything! The feel of the clay under my fingers, the delight of creation. Opening a kiln and marvelling at the surprises of the firings. Exchanges and collaborations with my apprentices. Opening the door of my studio in the morning and not knowing what awaits me.
