Ceramicist

Tashkent, Uzbekistan

Unmistakably Uzbek ceramics

  • Alisher carries forward an Uzbek ceramic tradition in new forms
  • His pieces feature Rishtan red clay and are often hand painted
  • He shares his skills with his students at the ceramic school he established

Alisher Nazirov creates clay works that honour the legacy of Rishtan, the ancient tradition of Uzbek ceramics. He inherited centuries-old techniques after apprenticing under three master ceramicists from the age of 12. Alisher works with native clay and luminous mineral-rich ishkor glaze to revive archaeological forms with his own contemporary twist. "My deep knowledge of and familiarity with Japanese ceramic culture has broadened my perspective without altering its roots," he says. Today, through the school he founded and the usto-shogird tradition, Alisher continues to shape future generations. His practice reveals that mastery is measured by patience, humility and knowledge entrusted to others.

Alisher Nazirov is a master artisan: he began his career in 1 970 and he started teaching in 2005.

INTERVIEW

I entered the ceramic workshop at 12 and never really left. My teachers taught me that clay is not simply a material to shape, but one to listen to with patience. Every vessel carries the memory of those who formed it before us.

Tradition is never preserved by copying. I study historical forms, understand their purpose and allow them to evolve through my own hands. The past should remain recognisable, but every generation must add its own chapter.

Everything begins with place. Rishtan's clay, natural ishkor glaze and generations of inherited knowledge give the ceramics their unmistakable character. The material already holds its own voice: my task is to reveal it, not overpower it.

Mastery is not something you claim for yourself. It is recognised by teachers, reflected in apprentices and tested over a lifetime. Even after decades by the kiln, I remain a student of the craft.
