Furniture maker | Civitavecchia, Italy

Furniture handcrafted with the five senses

  • Alessio is inspired by nature and uses materials that preserve its integrity
  • He loves wood and believes that every plank of wood has its own story to tell
  • His works often arise from the sharing of insights and ideas

Alessio Gismondi and his workshop Codice-a-barre have deep roots. Alessio is the third generation in his family of interior design and handmade artistic furniture and accessories. Alessio works with three other artisans in his workshop, handcrafting each project by carefully selecting materials and wood finishes. He collaborates with designers, and enjoys developing original research projects, too. In 2024, in collaboration with two dermatologists, Dr. Massimo Papi and Dr. Biagio Didona, Alessio created the CON_TATTO collection, which consists of nine pieces of furniture inspired by the most common dermatological diseases. In his Puzzle project, he developed a special technique to recover wood destined to be shredded, achieving a fascinating texture, for a high-impact console table.

Why do you think collaborations are so important?
I believe that only by sharing ideas, visions and skills is it possible to create something special that can tell new and old stories in an innovative way. This is why curiosity and research are fundamental, including in the choice and use of materials.
What is your relationship with wood?
Wood has to be respected, it has to be analysed, listened to. If you want it to continue to convey the best results, you have to understand what kind of wood you are dealing with, using all five senses.
What special projects do you have in the pipeline?
I am now working to reintroduce the Pinocchio puppet from the timeless tale written by Carlo Collodi between 1881 and 1883 in a new key. I am also creating a bordone, the pilgrim's staff, for the Holy Year celebrations, using hazel wood and nails from boats wrecked on the island of Lampedusa.
What is your opinion on the present and future of handicrafts?
Crafts and craftsmanship are the result of centuries-old traditions and continuous innovations. I believe they should be strongly preserved and promoted, because they are a unique and priceless heritage, in every country. That is why I am an active member of CNA, the Italian National Confederation of Handicrafts, both locally and nationally.
