The journey through An Island of Light ends in the Borges Labyrinth, where a tapestry designed by Es Devlin and created by BONOTTO showcases the flora and fauna of our cities. Drawing a parallel between the threat to both endangered species and rare crafts, it invites us to see, hear and feel our homes as an interconnected web of species and cultures, to remember their names and to sing those under threat into continued existence. The title echoes the words of the late US environmental activist and author Joanna Macy: “Now it can dawn on us: we are the world knowing itself. As we relinquish our isolation, we come home again... we come home to our mutual belonging.” The tapestry was made by the master artisans of BONOTTO, an Italian textile manufacturer known as the ‘slow factory’, which advocates for traditional methods of textile creation as opposed to industrial standardisation and mass production. Woven on mechanical wooden shuttle looms using a technique invented in Paris by the Gobelin manufacturer, the tapestry is made from recycled waste plastic, pure virgin wool and Japanese washi paper, and took 500 hours to create.
