Rosa Maria Kulzer

Ceramicist

A passion for pots

  • Rosa Maria creates stoneware pieces
  • Her ceramics are made for daily appreciation
  • She calls her assortments “pot families”

Rosa Maria Kulzer’s background in Interior Architecture shines through when she talks about ceramics and the importance of coherence in her work and with its surroundings: her "pot families", as she calls them, compliment one another, and are objects to be seen and to be used. Surrounded by ceramics in her workshop, the importance of creating objects with a purpose and an aesthetic sense are at the core of this craftswoman's vision. Her tableware and vases invite us to see everyday objects as more than just practical. Her love of clay, “an earthly material with infinite possibilities”, shows in the way she creates minimalistic shapes with natural colours and textures so that the stoneware can be presented at its best and most natural state.

What brought you to ceramics?
Living in Lisbon I was fascinated by the history of ceramics, but the trigger was in Germany when a friend opened her cabinet filled with various ceramics and chose the ones for our food and tea. I learned to have a direct relationship with the tableware.
Why did you choose clay?
It is an earthly material, you can harvest it all over the world directly from nature and work it. It has infinite opportunities to make the shape or textures you want. And after firing it, you can use it for everyday needs.
What do you love most about your profession?
Developing the “pot families” I see popping up in my head, feeling the textures of the natural material similar to taking a stone on the beach or a seed in the forest, and this feeling of creating objects that will be used daily and appreciated at home.
What is your studio like?
My ceramics are well placed, like in a living room, and I work alongside them. I'm surrounded by items inviting me continuously to create more “pot families”, which complement themselves and the environment they are submerged in.
