Architectural stained glass
- Marie believes accuracy is almost more important than beauty
- Calligraphy, dance and shadow theatre all inspire her
- She loves to be given a carte blanche
Since opening her own workshop in 2015, Marie Grillo specialises in the creation of stained glass windows for architecture projects. She boasts a rich practical and theoretical curriculum which enables her to carry out projects from A to Z, from the artistic research phase to the installation. Drawing inspiration from Franck Llyod Wright’s linear patterns and Charles Rennie Mackintosch’s gracious curves, her work usually involves matching straight graphic rhythms with more organic, spontaneously dynamic gestures. Her stained glass windows are always conceived as architectural works in their own right, with their innovative and singular aesthetics that express Marie's creativity and an element of the unexpected.
INTERVIEW
I am fascinated by glass as a material, by its resistance despite its fragile aspect. For me the art of stained glass is very close to dance, finding the right gesture and searching for precision. Finally, I enjoy the relationship with time that this profession demands.
During a trip to Céfalù in Sicily. I visited a Moorish basilica in which contemporary stained glass windows had been installed that contrasted beautifully with the style of the building. I left the church knowing that I wanted to explore the art form.
I define myself as a creative craftsperson. I pay as much attention to both technical and artistic qualities. I always try to have a musical ear in relation to buildings. I like surprising and bold proposals, yet my work always needs to be accurate.
I love this craft for its many facets and the wide range of skills it involves: drawing, painting, cutting, mounting, doing construction sites, carrying panels on scaffolding. No one day is the same. Each new creation involves its own research and experimentation.
