Puddling

This sculpture by Toru Fukuda was crafted entirely from wood without the use of paint. The butterfly’s colours were created using the mokuzōgan wood inlay technique, while the water droplet was carved from the same block as the base, allowing the continuous grain to evoke transparency. Water droplets suggest traces of human presence, while the butterfly symbolises the coexistence of people and nature. The work embodies the artist’s Japanese perspective on the relationship between the human and natural worlds.
