Earthenware
These sculptures by Ibrahim Said were hand built in ceramic, with a top-heavy body poised above a narrow base that creates a sense of suspension. Their surfaces were carved and finished with a shimmering lustre. While the glossy finish mimicks the walls of Islam’s places of worship, the decoration draws on ancient Egyptian Fatimid water filter patterns. Placing them on the jug’s exterior, rather than its interior, takes away functionality and invites an inward perspective.
