Metamorphosis IV

This sculpture by Cathryn Shilling was crafted by fusing together rods of clear glass until they resembled a sheet of woven fabric. It was then re-fired and shaped through bending and draping, and coated with a layer of 24 carat gold. Combining gold with glass, the work reflects on how our public face is often a mask, while body language shows our true nature. The gold, a thin optical coating, symbolises this outward persona, often concealing inner fragility.
