The balance of proportions

  • Omar's passion for iron craftsmanship has a long family tradition
  • In his works he expresses the strength of metal through new forms
  • He opened his studio as a sign of change after the pandemic

Omar Sporzon developed a passion for the art of craftsmanship thanks to his father. When he was but 13 years of age, in his spare time, Omar would go to his father's blacksmith workshop and learnt the hard work and effort involved in practising this craft. His passion for ironworking grew more and more. After studying electronics and working for a few years, in 2007, he decided to give it all up and set up his own business as an iron craftsman. Thanks to his great mastery of metalworking, he was able to start making objects and his studio Temper was born in 2020. His work is characterised by pure geometries and classic proportions that convey a balanced and timeless elegance. Temper draws its concept from the Latin word temperatio, which indicates balance and proportionality of component parts, and at the same time suggests the idea of the union of two elements after a process of synthesis, like the alloying of metals.

How did you decide to set up your workshop?
It all begins with a family history that brings together design thinking and craftsmanship: Eleonora Aguzzi – founder of the brand and my wife, me – co-founder and lead design craftsman, and Alessandro De Vecchi – designer and my wife’s cousin, who holds the role of artistic director.
What was the first design object you made?
Shortly before the lockdown in 2020, I found some scrap pieces of ironwork in my office. On a sheet of paper I drew a flower and in less than half an hour I built a flower out of raw iron with those scrap pieces. That flower gave me the idea to create design objects and was a symbol of change after the pandemic.
What are the special features of your works?
All Temper products are made entirely by hand and offer a high level of customisation, as well as the possibility of being easily disassembled. They are characterised by sculptural aesthetics and simple geometries assembled in original ways.
Do you master any specific techniques?
Welding and assembly are the techniques I master best. I use special custom jigs to ensure that all components come together perfectly, allowing me to achieve a high level of craftsmanship in the assembly process. In addition, the welds I create are very original and can create the design of the object which appeals greatly to all the young designers who have collaborated with us.
