Balla Niang is a Senegalese artist and designer working with locally sourced recycled materials such as ebony, leather and cattle horn. He creates design objects intended to stand the test of time. Based on the outskirts of Dakar, Balla’s studio Nulangee produces work that is exhibited around the world. Set up in 2002 by Balla’s late brother Babacar and rooted in spirituality, Nulangee creates zoomorphic sculptural pieces handcrafted from materials that have been discarded, referencing the issue of deforestation. Through it, Balla seeks to promote Senegalese craftsmanship and knowledge in its most artistic dimension.
