During her art studies, an unexpected jewellery course sparked Ayat Dhahi's passion for metalsmithing. She spent two years learning the craft on her own before earning an MA from Savannah College of Art and Design in the USA, followed by training at Bishopsland Educational Trust in the UK. Ayat crafts jewellery, metal boxes and sculptural objects, using copper, brass and silver. Her creations have evolved from minimal geometric forms to intricate Islamic patterns. "Metalsmithing is a slow craft. I hope people who view my work appreciate the craftsmanship that goes into it, particularly in the context of a fast-paced world," Ayat says. She creates distinct collections as well as one-of-a-kind exhibition pieces, often collaborating with woodworkers for handbag handles or ceramicists for stone settings.
