Asma Alshamari's ceramic practice draws on Saudi Arabian traditions, cultural landmarks and regional motifs. She started out as a self-taught ceramicist before refining her skills under a master craftsperson. Her creative process begins with a sketch and a 3D digital concept. Using traditional hand building and wheel throwing techniques, Asma refines each piece before completing it with firing and glazing. “I enjoy working with simple and intuitive ideas so that everyone can effortlessly connect with my creations and find joy in using them every day," she says. For select creations, such as traditional water-cooling jars known as Zeer, she uses local Saudi clay to keep the craft authentic and rooted in tradition.

INTERVIEW
My journey began through personal experimentation and self-guided learning. I have always loved crafts, but clay stuck with me the most because of its versatility. That one material allows for an endless variety of creations.
My work is deeply influenced by Saudi Arabian culture, heritage and historical landmarks. I draw inspiration from sites in the city of Al-Ula, such as Qasr Al-Farid castle and Jabal Al-Fil landmark rock formation, as well as cultural motifs like camels, palm trees and Saudi coffee. Many tourists love taking home tangible pieces that remind them of the places they have visited.
My favourite piece is the Chemex Dallah coffee pot. It brings together traditional Saudi coffee culture and modern drip-coffee equipment into a functional item for daily use. It received international praise and has even been presented as a gift to government ministers at major diplomatic events.
Ceramics demand immense time and patience. The biggest challenge is the unpredictability of the final result. The clay can shrink, glaze colours can change and pieces are prone to cracking during the final drying stage right before firing, even after months of hard work.
