Helmut & Yui: Lamp making

Lamp maker Helmut Frerick based in Germany & Japanese fellow Yui Wata

A former clinical researcher, German master Helmut has spent over four decades developing his own handmade plant fibre paper, which he sculpts into one-of-a-kind light works that incorporate optic fibres and LEDs. Self-taught, he once founded two experimental papermills and now shares his lifetime of technical knowledge out of his workshop in Gerolstein.

Yui graduated from Kanazawa College of Art, where she developed a material-based practice focused on the inherent properties of fibres – tension, gravity and the body's dialogue with matter – and sustained experimentation. At the core of her methodology is her desire to explore how we can exist in relation to others, materials and the environment.
