A prismatic aubergine dream
- Loumi works with a new material transforming discarded aubergine peels
- Her practice relies on observation and testing
- The environment is at the heart of her practice
Loumi Le Floc'h brought her dream to life by developing a fabric-like material of her own. A textile designer trained in Brussels and Berlin, she focused her material research into giving a second life to the discarded products of the food industry. Loumi found the unique aesthetic qualities she was looking for in aubergine peels, and created her own material called Precious Peels. "For me, creating necessarily involves questioning the impact of my practice on the environment," she says. Loumi collects the peels from Lebanese restaurants, and processes them through natural and chemical treatments that trigger deep shaded colours, from brilliant reds to velvety browns and navy hues. The texture of the resulting material resembles that of paper and fabric, revealing an endless potential of applications.

INTERVIEW
It is essential to consider the impact of the materials and processes we develop as designers and makers. I aim to give a meaningful second life to organic waste products.
I collect aubergine peels, cook, soak and shape each one by one with a scalpel into the form I have in mind. The final stage consists of composing each piece on a support surface. Once the composition is complete, the material is removed from the support, revealing itself.
I have experimented with other peels such as banana, kiwi, mango and potato skins. While they produce interesting results with a certain translucency, none of them offers the versatility, colour hues and striking contrasts like the aubergine peel does.
Aubergine peels are delicate yet supple, capable of evoking the feel of fabric. Their versatility allows interior designers to employ them for panels and space dividers, as well as in hanging textile installations, scenography, or fashion creations.
