Bottega Artigiana Pontiggia

Blacksmithing

Cosio Valtellino, Italy

Artistry in metalwork

Founded in 1964 by Armindo Pontiggia and revitalised in 1989 under the leadership of his son Walter, Bottega Artigiana Pontiggia has elevated the craft of blacksmithing. Now reaching its third generation with the involvement of daughters Alice and Irene, the atelier recognises the importance of keeping heritage and craftsmanship alive in the heart of Valtellina. The workshop’s distinctive value lies in the way that it seamlessly blends its traditional roots and a desire for continuous innovation in its structural and interior design pieces. While grounded in the mastery of classic tinsmithing, Walter’s work has developed metal craft into a creative language of modern technology.

The atelier collaborates with architects and designers to bring unique technical solutions and extraordinary details to life. Its output spans structural works such as piers and staircases, as well as refined interior design elements and CNC-machined textures, while working primarily with iron, steel, aluminium, copper and brass. Recent pieces have included sculptural copper tables, waxed iron fireplaces and a fully functioning iron astrolabe and sundial. By blending ancient techniques with cutting edge machinery, Bottega Artigiana Pontiggia transforms metals into functional works of art built to stand the test of time.
