The Beehave

This is a log-shaped beehive sporting legs, that has been scorched black and engraved. Marlène Huissoud designed this piece for Sir Ian Blatchford, Director and Chief Executive of the Science Museum Group. This sculpture is made from red oak and honeybee bio resin. The red oak was varnished inside and out with propolis, a dark resinous material produced by bees to seal gaps in the hive. This resin protects the timber and attracts bees with its scent.
