Layer series, Prunus vase
Using the motif of the Korean Prunus vase, Dongwan Kim shapes the glass through glassblowing technique. The surface is then carved with a repetitive pattern through engraving, a technique that cuts into glass. Painting and drying lacquer comes next, and is repeated to coat the surface with several layers. The lacquered surface is then ground again to reveal the textured layers of lacquer, allowing the artist to uncover the layers of lacquer to complete a cohesive pattern and texture.
